The Shannon Schieber Memorial Roofing Endowment Fund

Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC has established the Shannon Schieber Memorial Roofing Endowment Fund in order to repair roofs for low-income elderly and/or disabled District of Columbia homeowners who are unable to afford these repairs, and are thereby put at risk.

In 2008, the average cost of roof repairs for an applicant's home in DC was $3,600. Rebuilding Together was only able to assist a quarter of the qualified applicants because of the limited funds vailable for roofs. Although most repairs are done by volunteers, roof repairs require specialized skilled labor. Some roofing contractors provide volunteer service and discounted fees for their services but it is still necessary to hire roof repair contracts for many Rebuilding Together projects. For homeowners with few resources, Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC's assistance is a rare port in the storm. We could help many more if we had adequate funds to repair roofs.

Please donate to the Shannon Schieber Memorial Roofing Endowment Fund. Your gift will go into the Fund, where it will gain interest, allowing us to repair roofs for years to come. In addition, your contribution is tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. To donate, use the form below and mail it with your check to our office. Who was Shannon Schieber?

Shannon Schieber was the daughter of Vicki and Sylvester Schieber, who were long-time house captains and volunteers with Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC. She was a remarkable young woman who excelled scholastically. In 1998, at age 23, she was working towards her PhD in economics in Philadelphia, PA when she was murdered in her apartment by an as yet unidentified assailant. Shannon was known to have a “soft spot” for the Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC program and often accompanied her parents when working on Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC home repair projects. Her doctorate was on the topic of retirement savings and behavior at the time of her death. In Shannon's memory, Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC has named its Roofing Endowment Fund after her.
