Help Your Neighbors Year-Round!

Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC, maintains lists of homeowners who need assistance year round. These homeowners qualified for the program but did not receive assistance due to insufficient financial resources or the lack of volunteers with the necessary skills for these projects.

You or your organization can sponsor a neighbor’s home repair project any time of year. When you sponsor home repairs, you have the option of assembling your own volunteer team and doing the repairs yourself! Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC staff will match you with a homeowner at a suitable project level and then work to guide you step by step to ensure your group has a memorable and meaningful volunteer experience.

1. Celebrate a relative’s or friend’s birthday with a rehab work party -- John Thorne, a Washington, DC lawyer, honored his wife’s 40th birthday in a unique and special way. He decided to sponsor the cost of roof repairs to the Mathis house in his wife’s name. The home was burned in a fire a year prior, leaving the family homeless. In addition to sponsoring the roof repairs, they also gathered a group of the couple’s friends and neighbors and spent his wife’s birthday, making repairs on the interior.

2. Have your family reunion at a neighbor’s house -- Create a unique experience your family will remember for years to come. A repair project will bring joy and fun not only to your own family but also to a neighbor in need!

3. Honor a loved one’s passing with a memorial fund to benefit District of Columbia homeowners in need --Vicki and Sylvester Scheiber transformed a personal family tragedy into a triumph of community spirit. Hundreds of friends of the Scheiber family sent donations to Rebuilding Together of Washington, DC in honor of the Schiebers' daughter, Shannon, who died tragically last year. These donations made the necessary interior repairs possible, allowing the Mathis family, that had been burned out of their home, to be reunited, (four children with their mother) in their home.
